Lavazza to Buy $250 Million Stake in Green Mountain

Not sure what this means, but I just saw this article on Bloomberg BusinessWeek and it seems that Green Mountain and Lavazza may be teaming up.    Could be that Lavazza Espresso will get quickly bigger in the US or that Keurig / Green Mountain will get bigger in Europe.

My guess is that this will be a pretty powerful partnership.

In the last three years, Green Mountain Corporation has taken direct control of the following  Keurig K-cup producers and manufacturers.
  • Keurig Premium Brewing Systems
  • Tully's Coffee (K-cups and Office Coffee products)
  • Timothy's World Coffee (including Emeril's Coffee K-cups)
  • Diedrich Coffee Roasters (including Coffee People and Gloria Jean's Coffee)

Keurig K-cups --- How to Buy and What to Watch For

Keurig K-cup Magic:

Regardless of where you buy them, or what size box you buy, the k-cups all start the same.    They are manufactured at the coffee roaster on assembly lines then packages for the different sales channel.

The question is really your goal.   A primary advantage of the Keurig Brewing system and k-cups are the wide variety of coffees and teas that are available.  And because of the different roasters, the different roast profiles that are available.    There are over 170 varieties of coffee and teas available for the brewers from five unique roasters.

The difference in k-cups is the retailer.   At retail, the difference is really price, slection and value.  Each channel has its own advantages and disadvantages.

The chart below shows the basic differences between the k-cup sales channels.   While each of the retailer will have sales (coffee clubs, 20% coupons, in store specials, internet retailers like OneGreatCup seem to have the best overall mix of Selection, Value and Service.

What are the Differences in K-cups

For new Keurig owners and even those that have had a machine for a while, some k-cup definitions can be confusing.    Here are the basics.

K-cup strength:
K-cups come in two strengths, regular and Bold (or Exrtra Bold).

Regular:                       8 to 9 grams of coffee per k-cup
Bold / Extra-Bold:      11 to 12 grams of coffee per k-cup

More coffee per k-cup equal a Bold or Extra-Bold experience.

Roast:
Mild / Light - usually a coffee enjoyed at breakfast.  The description of mild really does fit the flavor.   Mild and light roast coffees generally have the most caffeine.
Medium / Full - a bit darker, fuller roast.  More flavorful and richer in taste.
Dark - Dark roast coffees will be darkest in the cup and have the deepest flavor, especially when using a bold k-cup.

New Keurig Home Office / Small Office Brewer Introduced

Keurig has introduced the B-155 Home Office / Small Office brewer and it is a winner.    A 90 ounce water tank, LCD display and super quite operation.    A great machine and available only through Keurig and Authorized distributors.

The B-155  has 4 brew sizes, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz and 10oz.   It has digital programming to allow customization of brew temperature and other options.    All in all a great offering.

We have been using the B-155 in our office for the last week and our initial impressions have been confirmed.   This is the best small office / home office brewer ever.....
  • The 90 ounce water tank and the easy grab handle make it easy to refill when you have to
  • The adjustable water temperature really lets you customize the temperature of the brew
  • This machine is QUIET !!!
    • Some of the other Keurigs we have tried sound like a buzz saw starting up,  this machine is very quiet and does not nearly as much.
